A challenging sport

What is Olympic Weightlifting?

Olympic Weightlifting is an exciting and challenging sport that relies on technique every bit as it does strength. The two lifts in Olympic Weightlifting are the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk. The Snatch is a wide-grip, one-move lift. The Clean and Jerk is a close-grip, two-move lift.

What is included?

The sessions can be added as a supplement to your current CrossFit training program:

• Max 3 training sessions per week
• Expert coaching by NGB Olympic Weightlifting coaches*
• Access to top quality facility dedicated to Olympic Weightlifting
• Technique drills and accessory work, along with well thought out progressions to help you improve your lifts.
• Includes programming of accessory and supplemental work to improve positioning.
• Focus on the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch.

CrossFit Heerlen is a community-driven, strength and conditioning gym and has quickly grown into a diverse, welcoming club of all levels and ability and now boasts a significant proportion of female athletes.

Please be aware, access to the CFH Olympic Weightlifting Club can only be added as a supplement to your CrossFit membership.

Why Olympic Weightlifting?

The Snatch and Clean and Jerk bring speed, power, coordination, agility, accuracy and balance to training and are indispensable to CrossFit programming and developing a well-rounded athlete.

In comparison with other strength sports, which test limit strength (with or without lifting aids), Olympic weightlifting tests aspects of human ballistic limits (explosive strength); the lifts are therefore executed faster—and with more mobility and a greater range of motion during their execution—than other strength movements.

While there are relatively few competitive Olympic weightlifters in comparison to CrossFitters, the lifts performed in the sport of weightlifting, and in particular their component lifts (e.g. squats, deadlifts, cleans), are commonly used by other elite athletes in other sports to train for both explosive and functional strength. Also for the recreational sportsmen and -women Olympic weighlifting will lead to (and require) both physical (Stamina, Strength, Flexibility) and neurological (Coordination, Accuracy, Agility and Balance) adaptations. Long story short, through Olympic Weightlifting you will gain Power and Speed.
