Meet the NEW COACH: Sabrina Gutierrez

We are excited to announce our newest CrossFit Level 1 trainer, Sabrina! She is a very positive multi-talented English and Spanish speaking CrossFit coach, Holisitic Nutrionist and Yoga Teacher who takes her job very seriously. Her work is also what makes her happy: helping people get better. She traveled a lot and lived, coached and worked with different people in different parts of the world. Once you join her classes, you will notice that she has acquired special skills through the life experience of her young life. We are very happy with Sabrina in our gym and are convinced that she will positively influence many people’s lives!

Get to Know Coach Sabrina!

Name: Sabrina Laumen – Gutierrez

Can you tell us a bit about you and your sporting background?
I’m from Venezuela! I lived in Aruba and Barcelona before I moved to Heerlen together with my husband and two dogs. Besides being a CF-L1 Trainer, I’m also a Yoga Teacher and a Holistic Nutritionist. My sports background: I started doing sports in my early teenage years, and have been doing sports even since with on and off periods. Started going to the gym, doing some weight training, spinning classes, and some mat pilates.  I had a period where I wanted to get better at running and signed up for a 10K race, and enjoyed training for it and the race itself but afterward, my knees disagree with so much running so I stopped and after did it only on occasions and very short distances.  Then I moved to Aruba and started practicing yoga, and also became very curious about CrossFit. Then, when I moved to Barcelona, I joined an app in which you can attend multiple locations that offer different activities and sports, from yoga to pilates, Crossfit, boxing, Stand up paddle boarding, and more…  Here is where I started attending lots of Strength and Conditioning and CrossFit classes.

When and how did you find out about CrossFit and CrossFit Heerlen?
My first actual CrossFit experience was in Venezuela, I was very young maybe around 17 years old, and only went once. It was still very new in the country and I was already attending a regular gym, but I liked it since that day and wanted to try more. About CrossFit Heerlen:  I first saw it online while I was still living in Barcelona, and as soon as I moved to the Netherlands I came to check out the place and immediately loved it.

What made you want to try CrossFit when you started your CrossFit journey? How did you experience your CrossFit journey until now?
I wanted to try something different and more challenging and also I liked the fact that it is done in groups. My CrossFit journey is been quite fun, the more I train and practice, the better I feel mentally and physically; and also is very rewarding to see that I can do things now I couldn’t do before. Improvements happen quickly if you put in the work! It’s all about practice. Also I love the fact that every WOD is different, so I never feel bored. Always love trying new things and meeting new people!

What made you apply for the coaching position at CrossFit Heerlen?
I loved the idea of being a CrossFit coach and helping others with their journey, and when I saw that CrossFit Heerlen had the opportunity I didn’t think twice and went for it.

How did you experience the hiring procedure and coach development program at CrossFit Heerlen?
Since day one I felt at home, and everyone from the team has been beyond friendly and helpful! Everything went very smoothly. The CrossFit Heerlen coach development program was great, I feel I learned a lot about becoming a Great coach and also about myself.

What is your ultimate goal in CrossFit and/or at CrossFit Heerlen?
My goal in CrossFit is to stay fit mentally and physically, to always try to improve what I do and who I am, and inspire others on the way. To keep learning and growing!

What are some of your favorite activities outside the box?
Practicing Yoga, traveling, cooking, being in nature, learning new things and meeting new people!

Can you tell us something about yourself, or is there something you would like to share, people do not expect?
I make handmande jewelry! It’s something not many people know, but I’ve been doing it for quite some years now. I learned it from my mom which is also a Jewelry Artist. Love creating things with my hands. In the near future I want to have my own webshop.

What is your favorite aspect of being a CrossFit coach?
I think my favorite part is connecting with the community, and learning from all the members and their stories. Also, the fact that as a coach there is always a new challenge! No day is like the one before.

Finally, as a coach, would you like to say something or share something with our members that hasn’t already been said during previous questions?
My advice: Be true to yourself and others, to show up and do the work, to compete with youself only and not compare to others, everyone is different! And to push yourself but with kindness, always listen to your body and take care of it. Last but not least: don’t wait for things, make it happen! Life is short and we only have one, so make it count.
