We are very proud and excited to announce Ramon van der Krogt as the new CrossFit Kids & Teens coach at CrossFit Heerlen. Ramon is a member of our gym for years and wanted to help other people go through their own transformation with CrossFit.
He took the CrossFit Level 1 Trainer’s course, completed an internship with our Coaches Development Program and is now a CrossFit coach at CrossFit Heerlen. Ramon is a father of four kids, husband, owner of a coaching company and CrossFit Level 1 / Kids trainer, and very passionate about CrossFit as a lifestyle. He “walked the talk” after being obese and a heart patient himself, but now he is fit as a fiddle! For all of you who wants the same, he says: “My story could be yours too!”

Can you tell us a bit about you and your sporting background?
I am born and raised in Heerlen. At the age of 8 I started Kung Fu. I really loved this sport and practised it 14 years. Due to a severe back injury I had to quit. It took me years to recover. In the mean time I started a career as teamleader, manager and in the end director in customer services. As a side dish I started to coach young professionals and managers. My family started to grow too… I have four kids now. Two ladies and two gents. I really love being a dad. It’s the best thing ever happened in my live. At the age of 36 I became member of the executive board at VGZ health insurances. I did that for 6 years. In the end I wasn’t happy and got health problems. I was overweighted (150kg) and got severe heart problems. Which, long story short, apparantly I was born with. Two and a half years ago I got two surgeries to fix it. CrossFit was my medicine. After my surgeries I still was heavy obese and I couldn’t walk more than a mile. Three weeks after my final health check I started CrossFit slowly. It was a rough journey last couple of years: I started my new company during recovery; an academy for entrepreneurs and members of (executive) boards and professionals in health companies. An uncertain future especially due to Corona. And sadly: I lost my dad. But this didn’t keep me from training 4-5 times a week. I started losing weight, getting fitter, and I started to become happy again. I tried to be the best dad I can be, and I will continue to do just that… I am really grateful for all the love and support I had from my family, the medical support and the CrossFit Heerlen coaches.
What made you want to try it in the beginning?
I saw a documentary about CrossFit on Netflix during my sickbed. I was really depressed at the time… I saw this documentary of the fittest people on earth and I thought… well, maybe this gets me back on my feet! LOL
What is your favorite aspect of being a CrossFit coach?
My favorite aspect of being a CrossFit coach is helping people move better, and overcome fears… with little steps. And hey! I was really a mess when I started and I still am far from perfect, as an athlete and as a human. So if I am able to become fitter there is really hope for you 😊 And I love to support you to persevere whenever you’re feeling down, lonely or hopeless. I also love to celebrate your successes! CrossFit is a lifestyle.. I want to help you make it your lifestyle.
What made you apply?
I really want to give back to others what I received during my journey to become a happier, healthier and stronger person. Maybe I needed it much earlier in life, so I love the fact I start to coach a much younger group of athletes.
What’s your favourite CrossFit WOD?
I love big chippers, with lots of diversity and a buddy!
And what’s your favourite CrossFit movement/exercise?
The Bear Complex and the Bench Press.
What’s your favourite workout music (genre and/or track)?
Energetic happy house music.
What are some of your favourite activities outside the box?
Spend time with my family, dream and driving my motorcycle. And… oh yeah: I love toilet time.. so relaxed.
Finally, what is your ultimate goal in CrossFit and/or at CrossFit Heerlen?
To have inner peace with myself, even when I am a terrible person or in a terrible place within myself… Just that… And to love unconditionally… In CrossFit I want to master all movements on RX level. And also one of my ultimate goals is that when I am old, someone tells me that I really helped them to live the life that makes that person happy. In a good, fit and healthy way. Another goals is to have a really good laugh every day.
