CrossFit for Health VS CrossFit for Competition

Why do you CrossFit? Is it to live a healthy lifestyle, is it to find yourself on a podium, or is it simply to look good naked? People CrossFit for many different reasons but what people do not know is that those reasons should dictate their approach to CrossFit. This is a quick article to give my “two cents” (my opinion) on the subject.

“But I like to do a competition every now and then for fun”

Doing CrossFit for health reasons requires you to only visit your local box, CrossFit Heerlen, 2-4 times a week, make healthy nutrition decisions, and live an active lifestyle (bike rides, hikes, obstacle runs, rowing, and much more). This is not too different than what a competitor would do, however one the major differences happens within the gym. If you are not someone who desires to stand on that podium is there a reason for you to do butterfly pull-ups, handstand walks, squat 150 kg, or have a sub three minute Fran? NO. Can you still do those things if you want to? YES.

If you are not a competitor it doesn’t mean you are not giving your all. It just means you have different goals. For non-competitors, there is no reason to feel that you have to do those extraordinary movements and weights unless it is a personal goal of yours. If you want to snatch your body-weight that is awesome, and I (all the coaches) am here to help you. If you want to do strict pull-ups that is awesome, and I am here to help you. If you just want to be able to lift and hug your kids/grandkids for years to come that is awesome, and again CrossFit Heerlen is here to help you.


If that podium is what you desire, then you also need to understand a few things.

  • No movement is off limits and you must excel at all of them.
  • Hours and hours will be spent on technique alone.
  • You will be more prone to injury. Look at any competitive sport, professional or amateur, injury happens. So you must spend extra time on recovery and rehab.
  • Your time for training will go beyond the hours of CrossFit Heerlen. So a lot of work must be accomplished at home.
  • You will have to make sacrifices.
  • You will need to educate yourself as much as possible, smart athletes make better athletes. *This actually applies to CF for health as much as Sport. The more you know the better.
  • Understand the difference between competing and training. This again applies to both Health and Sport. I will address this in a future article.

    This is not absolute, there is a gray area. It is not only competitors and only those who do it for health. You may find yourself in the middle somewhere. I myself get into “moods” where I like to compete and there are times where I hate competing. The bottom line of this article is that you are not required to strict press your bodyweight, do muscle-ups, or complete Murph Rx; we just ask you give your all and have fun doing it.
