CrossFit Heerlen as a rule is not that big on formality. Short shorts, no shirt? Whatever you like. Screaming, grunts, groans? Hey, whatever gets you through the WOD.

However, as a box owner I think there are a few points of etiquette that should be covered. Good sportsmanship, support, and respect. That’s it. That is what we demand at CrossFit Heerlen. We want to guarantee we provide you with a fun and safe environment while training. To ensure this, please read and keep in mind the Unwritten Rules of CrossFit Heerlen.

The Unwritten Rules of CrossFit Heerlen

1. You Get What You Give
Effort is more important than any other attribute. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed if you can’t perform as well or lift as much as other members. It doesn’t matter so long as you push yourself each and every workout.

2. Listen
Don’t argue with a coach over form or ROM. Just do the rep again. First off, the coach is right; secondly, it’s only going to make you stronger. Do not chat (it’s rude), be silent and listen when your coach is explaining the WOD. We are looking out for your best interest and training progress. We are the coaches and don’t want to see anyone get hurt or develop bad habits. We are here to provide a safe and motivating environment designed for your success.

3. Leave your Ego at the Door
Don’t allow your ego to get in the way of training. There is always room for improving and progressing. Remember, there is always someone out there bigger, faster, and stronger than you.

4. Be Patient
Accidents and injuries usually come as a result of impatience. Don’t be greedy. Slow down. Ask questions. Ask for help. Upward progression in strength, speed and ability WILL COME.

5. Be an athlete
You are the athlete, not the coach. Encouragement is expected, coaching other athletes is not accepted. We know that members have good intentions when they start giving coaching cues, but there is a big difference between “C’mon you can do it!” and “You need to… [insert coaching advice].” If you see something that looks unsafe, grab a trainer, that’s what we are here for!

5. Do not cheat.
Do every rep, with solid technique, no matter the time it takes. You only cheat yourself of the opportunity to become a better athlete and person. There is no honor in cheating, what joy is there in a victory you didn’t earn?

6. Don’t be an ass.
Nobody likes a (smart)ass. Don’t just talk about yourself, ask your fellow athletes how they are, what big achievements they have done recently, how their training is going.


7. Support each other.
You don’t have rivals here, you have people who push you to do more, go faster, be better. If you are done with your workout, gather around and cheer them on their last rep. Slap hands and pat shoulders, telling people what a great job they did, and mean it. If you see someone new, be friendly, introduce yourself. Try to remember how you felt at your first class.

8. Leave your Drama at the Door
Emotional issues? Don’t bring that stuff into the gym. Use your hour at the gym to clear your mind and focus on training hard. CrossFit Heerlen is your sanctuary and we want you to leave each training session stronger mentally and physically.

9. Clean up after yourself
Clean up equipment, sweat, spit, blood, chalk, dirt, vomit, handprints, and whatever else you’ve left behind.

10. Treat equipment with respect
Use it heavy and hard, but don’t abuse it. There is no need to throw down a 25KG overhead press! Do it only if necessary. And put your equipment away (where you found it). The 12KG kettlebell doesn’t go with the 24KG kettlebells.

11. Keep your children safe
Children are welcome to watch their parents train. However, we also want to keep kids and everyone else in our gym safe. Please make sure your kids stay off gym equipment and away from the weights.

12. Be Proud
We are respectful but we are not silent. You will too yell, grunt, scream, sweat, bleed, etc. Cheer, motivate and push your fellow athletes. Tell your family and friends how you’re getting in the best shape of your life. You’re having fun. You’re doing things you never thought possible.

13. Apply common sense 
Also remember that there can be such a thing as too loud, gross, aggressive or rude – common sense rule applies, please be respectful and stay positive. Also while cheering.

14. Have Fun
You’re going to work harder than you thought possible. It’ll hurt. Have fun with it. You will surpass your expectation if you keep a positive attitude.
