Meet the NEW COACH: Luca Pattiwael

We are excited to announce our newest Coach, Coach Luca!

Luca, a nurse and CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, is our newest addition to the team. She is also our youngest coach, but don’t let her young age underwhelm you. She is serious about coaching, CrossFit and our members. Her passion for coaching and dedication to the success of our athletes has already led to one of the biggest transformations we’ve seen from athlete to coach. Luca is a careful coach, very well-prepared and understands “the deeper side of coaching”. She knows the difference between a good coach and a great coach, and aspires to the latter. Her medical health background and knowledge of the human body also benefit her and her athletes. Join her classes and enjoy the best hour of your day!

Get to Know Coach Luca!

Name: Luca Pattiwael
Age:
 24

Can you tell us a bit about you and your sporting background?
I am Luca Pattiwael and I live in Maastricht together with my boyfriend Jordy (also athlete at CrossFit Heerlen). In daily life I am a Nurse (Kwaliteitsverpleegkundige). In this job I’m constantly involved in policy and implementation of projects. Also coaching on the job is a important part of the function.

In my younger years I started with Jazz ballet. I did this for almost 3 years. After that, in 2015, I started doing fitness in a regular gym. At first I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t had any experience at all. By scrolling through the internet and practicing I taught myself a lot of movements and little by little my technique got better and I got stronger. When I started to get more comfortable with fitness I actually started to love working out. After a few years I wanted to challenge myself more and so I started CrossFit.

When and how did you find out about CrossFit and CrossFit Heerlen?
When the gyms had to close due to COVID I had to find other options to keep training and moving. I bought equipment and decided to train at calesthenics fields and sport parks all over Maastricht. It was a way of combining weightlifting (with less equipment I had), gymnastics (using my own bodyweight) and sometimes also a little bit of cardio. In the meanwhile I discovered the CrossFit Games documentaries and got hooked! I thought it was so impressive that I knew I wanted this too!

I searched for different CrossFit boxes around Zuid-Limburg. When I discovered CrossFit Heerlen on the internet I saw many videos and photos that made me smile. I immediately signed up for the Fundamentals and that’s how my adventure at CrossFit Heerlen begun.

What made you want to try CrossFit when you started your CrossFit journey? How did you experience your CrossFit journey until now?
I wanted to challenge myself more physically and mentally. I also wanted to learn new movements and knowing how it feels to train in a group. From the moment I entered CrossFit Heerlen there has never been a moment of regret. The community feels like coming home in a warm sporty family. Also the diversity of movements under high intensity makes me feel satisfied at the end of the workout.

Finally, the feeling of getting faster, better and stronger keeps me dedicated and motivates me even more to do better.

What made you apply for the coaching position at CrossFit Heerlen?
As a Nurse I love to work and socialize with people and during my education and career I also learned to coach Nurses in training (Verpleegkundigen in opleiding).
Because I love playing sports I also created a goal to become a coach in the world of sports.

I searched for sport/trainer courses but never really got that excited. From the moment I entered CrossFit Heerlen, I guess it was my gut feeling telling me: ‘’Luca, this is what you want to be’’.

When the opportunity to sign in for the CrossFit Level 1 course combined with the Coaching Development Program came, I immediately knew I wanted to sign up. So that is what I did.

How did you experience the hiring procedure and coach development program at CrossFit Heerlen?
Intens but definitely worth it. Going through the whole procedure makes you aware of the whole principle of coaching. Following an internship at the box learns you how to reflect on yourself and teaches you where and when you can do better. Also getting feedback from the other coaches drives you to do better next time. In my opinion the coaching development program is really an added value in the road to become a great (junior) coach but also to grow as a person in daily life.

What is your ultimate goal in CrossFit and/or at CrossFit Heerlen?
My goal is to become a great coach and to keep learning by doing. Besides that I would also like to follow the CrossFit Level 2 Course to improve my coaching skills and to share all the information and tips with the athletes in the box.

As an athlete my goal is to become stronger and faster and above all to improve my technique in all functional movements. Also performing a bar and ring muscle up is one of my main goals.

What are some of your favorite activities outside the box?
Hanging out with friends, hiking in nature when the sun is shining, watching series or documentaries and going on city trips.

Can you tell us something about yourself, or is there something you would like to share, people do not expect?
Way before I started CrossFit people used to call me by my nickname: ‘’Fran’’. That being said… can you already guess what my favorite workout is? 😊

What is your favorite aspect of being a CrossFit coach?
I love seeing the smiles on people’s face and to see that they are satisfied after the workout. Giving athletes the best hour of their day is my main goal and is something that gives me energy. Also helping athletes to reach a new skill oR pushing boundaries is something that really feels good. Besides that you build a bond with the athletes. I think that community and warm feeling is something really special.

Finally, as a coach, would you like to say something or share something with our members that hasn’t already been said during previous questions?
When life knocks you down…. Do a burpee! Never forget to be proud of yourself, you are doing great!
